Clinical
While at my 10-week clinical rotation at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, I gained an all-encompassing experience of how clinical dietitians work with patients and healthcare professionals on a daily basis. I spent 8 weeks working directly with the Registered Dietitians and 2 weeks independently during staff relief. On average, I would see between 12-16 patients per day. I became proficient in writing full patient assessments in ADIME format including PES diagnostic statements. I gained valuable experience giving enteral and parenteral nutrition therapy recommendations to medical and surgical staff.
Each week I had the opportunity to attend TPN rounds and presented peer reviewed journal articles related to ICU patients to the surgical staff. I was also solely responsible for conducting the cardiac rehabilitation nutrition course to open heart surgery patients prior to discharge. Once per month, I assisted with the Morrison's SuperFood presentations in the hospital dining hall. |
Children's National Medical Center
Children's National Medical Center allowed me to spend 2 weeks in their facility working with seasoned pediatric dietitians. My first week was spent shadowing and working alongside with the outpatient dietitian in the IDEAL Weight Management Clinic. During my second week I shadowed the Pulmonary/Cystic Fibrosis dietitian and participated in pulmonary rounds with the healthcare team. While at Children's I gained additional experience using the Cerner Medical Record System.
I ended my Children's rotation with a case study presentation on an obese pediatric patient with autism spectrum disorder, fatty liver, and pre-diabetes. Check out my work samples page for the full presentation! |
